چکیده

The international urban environmental partnerships focus on brownfields redevelopment, smart growth, sustainable transportation and land use, urban watershed management, green buildings, and solid waste recycling (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency = EPA http://www.epa.gov/swerosps/bf/accomp2.htm). The emphasis of this project is a kick-off to detect this specific land use, i.e. brownfields, and by expanding upon object-oriented classification methods. On the global level brownfields first need to be characterized within their specific urban regions in different geographical latitudes and climates. Focussing on the local level brownfields sites in their certain urban environment can be described as a specifically defined class consisting of diverse objects that need to be characterized by their form, their position and their spatial context. As they may consist of different objects such as buildings, roads and vegetation an object-oriented classification approach is applied. The brownfields sites investigated upon are located in the City of Baltimore, Maryland, as EPA selected the City of Baltimore as one of 16 federal Brownfields Showcase Communities (http://www.epa.gov/brownfields/showcase.htm).

Object-Oriented Method for Automatic Extraction of Road from High Resolution Satellite Images

As the information carried in a high spatial resolution image is not represented by single pixels but by meaningful image objects, which include the association of multiple pixels and their mutual relations, the object based method has become one of the most commonly used strategies for the processing of high resolution imagery. This processing comprises two fundamental and critical steps towar...

Detecting and analysing "urban villages" in the Pearl River delta using multi-source remote sensing data

‘Urban villages’ is the Chinese version of informal settlement. It is a unique phenomenon that comprises mainly low-rise and congested, often illegal buildings surrounded by new constructions and high-rise buildings. Due to a lack of an unambiguous definition allowing for a spatial delineation of such areas, this article investigates a joint use of high-resolution optical and SAR satellite data...

Automatic Registration of High Resolution SAR and Optical Satellite Imagery in Urban Areas

The work presented in this thesis addresses the problem of registration of high resolution SAR and optical satellite imagery in dense urban areas. With the launch of high resolution remote sensing satellites in different modalities like TerraSAR-X, WorldView-1 and IKONOS-2, the contribution of remote sensing for various applications has received a tremendous boost. Specifically, the combined an...

Urban Change Extraction from High Resolution Satellite Image

Very high resolution space borne imagery is essential for a large scale and very detailed urban monitoring and the Quickbird sensor is one of those. It offers images with a spatial resolution of 0.61 m (panchromatic) and 2.44 m (four multispectral bands). Not only a mapping and cadastral surveying of urban objects can be done based on that kind of imagery. A special task is the detection of cha...

Shadow Analysis in High-Resolution Satellite Imagery of Urban Areas

High-resolution satellite imagery (HRSI) offers great possibilities for urban mapping. Unfortunately, shadows cast by buildings in high-density urban environments obscure much of the information in the image leading to potentially corrupted classification results or blunders in interpretation. Although significant research has been carried out on the subject of shadowing in remote sensing, very...
